Zu Audio Omen Def speakers (teszt a dailyswarm.com oldalról)
The future isn’t now, or ten minutes ago, it’s always progressing – moving forward. In fact It’s already over (not to get too Alan Watts on you on anything). The guys at Zu Audio truly understand this. Their marketing is strong, aimed at both social media as well as standard-issue audiophile print magazines (yes, they still exist, though their readerships are, most likely, less than this site at the moment). I wouldn’t be surprised if the web pages of magazines like Stereophile and The Absolute Sound find more readers through their reports on the web these days. However, no matter how strong the mission statement, or the way it reaches an audience, there is another concept Zu Audio grasps more than most Hifi companies today: The true meaning of value and the currency (not to mention integrity) of offering a product that’s hand-crafted in the States.
Despite today’s domestic economy being in the throes of possibly the worst recession since the twenties, thanks partially to the exportation of our jobs, knowledge, and leading edge manufacturing, there are still a few hard core, dedicated audio companies designing and building loudspeakers here (as well as fine electronics). The list however is getting shorter and shorter. I just heard that Kilpsch (a company that’s been building speakers here for over 30 years) was recently sold, so who knows how long their manufacturing facilities will remain here. Zu Audio has another edge as well (or, a curse as some may see it – not me however): They’re a young company.
This seemingly has no adverse effect on their ability to make a damn good speaker and that’s what counts. I challenge you to find a speaker at this price range, built in this country that offers more than the Omen Def for $3,100.00. That number may seem a bit expensive, but these are true full-range, floorstanding loudspeakers, not some slimmed down speaker tower that’s part of a home-theater-in-a-box solution.
The cabinets are beautifully hand-crafted (the first thing my wife noticed and loved) and they offer dual ten-inch woofers with one tweeter, in what’s commonly referred to as a D’appolito configuration (with the tweeter placed between the drivers in a vertical array). This arrangement is named after Joseph De’appolito (the supposed inventor of this specific loudspeaker design, however the original design called for two midrange drivers, not full range). These are the kinds of speakers you cranked during your teenage years listening to Kiss or Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. They are also equally capable of nuance, so jazz fans have no fear-they could please you as well. Bottom line is they bang, and they do so with the kind of sonic integrity you’d expect from a speaker more than twice their price (you have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes).
They required a bit of break-in (as most high performance loudspeakers do). I’d say they really started to open up after two weeks of constant play. Again, this is not un-common, and it was a pleasure to hear them blossom. We’re still hearing it today!
Voices are articulated with both detail and finesse, but with depth and realism. The Omen Defs conveyed the emotional impact of the music in a very engaging way, and that is one of the things I love most about great hifi, how it can transform your mood with the power, precision, and magic of music. Clock radios, no matter what type of plastic, internal contraptions they sport for bass control cannot deliver dynamics like this. Tori Amos’s presence during Boys for Pele was dark and seductive. I ended up listening to the entire album (something I haven’t done for years). The kick drum on “Glob” (Kenny Larkin mix) on Balance 017 (Mixed by Timo Mass) was tight and massive.
Set up properly, you can get them sounding like it’s simply music in the room with you, not a pair of tall boxes with pretty drivers. They do, admittedly, look pretty cool with aluminum rings encircling the woofers and inverted aluminum dome tweeters. The Omen Defs are house party rockers. They handled everything from bumpin’ house music to Cyndi Lauper, Ben Folds and Mogwai. Been searching for that big pair of Cerwin Vegas in your room that woke your parents up while you were in high school? Well, this is that speaker on performance enhancing drugs. Check them out as soon as you can. You can rock the party or simply provide smooth grooves for a dinner get-together. Zu Audio has helped to make stereo cool again.

Essence Features & Benefits Overview
Zu Essence is engineered from the ground up to set the standard for what is possible from an approachable high fidelity loudspeaker. Essence, like all Zu products, is built around the critical
human voice, which Zu defines as the deepest bass range through women’s upper most soprano (A1 55Hz through A6 and all the possible harmonics, approximately 10kHz). Serving this critical region of tone is Zu’s fourth generation 10” paper coned full-range driver, the very same driver used in their top loudspeaker. And to carry all the burnish and harmonic structure of instruments and content extending well beyond 10,000 cycles per second Zu integrates a sophisticated high effi ciency ribbon tweeter. Marry ribbon and Zu’s highly developed 10” driver to the first cabinet to fully integrate the Zu Griewe (ZuRG) technology, and witness the transformation of sound—A new level of realism and fi delity of playback—diffi cult to describe but effortlessly heard. Essence is simply complete in form and quality of sound. Please, give them a listen at your favorite hi-fi shop, and bring your music, the stuff you really listen to, and let Essence work its magic.
“All of us at Zu are super excited about the Essence; it truly does embody all that we have been reaching for these past years. It will convincingly playback everything we through at it, the stuff we love, from big power music like Wagner and Zakk Wylde, to the super complex, explosive and phrased. It reveals all the sweet angelic yet spicy timbre of Bjork, and the blood and guts emotion of Joe Strummer and Edward Ka-Spel. Yeah, it does nuance, light ‘n shadow, and dynamic contrast like we have never heard fr om anything remotely close to this size and price.
There’s nothing hyped or Technicolored in its playback either, what goes in is what comes out, be it raw, bombastic, animated, dirty, hi-fi , funk, ambient, or whatever. I dig this loudspeaker!”
• Zu260FRD/G4 full-range driver.
• High effi ciency, state-of-the-art ribbon tweeter running fr om 10kHz and up.
• Kimber Kap capacitors.
• MDF / Baltic birch cabinet.
• Full implementation of ZuRG driver / cabinet technology.
• Pure copper Zu Cable internal cabling.
• Cold forged termination.
• Cardas copper binding posts.
Zu260FRD/G4 is the heart and soul of the Zu Essence loudspeaker. The new fourth generation 10” full-range driver features the following:
Essence features Zu’s fourth generation full-range driver, designed to integrate eff ortlessly with the t • one and character of the ribbon tweeter.
• New high frequency lens / phaser, which serves several functions. First, it works together with the inner “whizzer” cone to increase the drivers high fr equency hemispherical spray
patt ern, measured as polar response. It also reduces phase divergence, and increases high fr equency effi ciency. And by reducing the wave to ray acoustic gradient, and widening the
hemispherical radiating patt ern (negatively known as beaming) the driver is bett er able to fi ll a wide space and bett er match the characteristics of the ribbon tweeter, which naturally
has a fairly wide dispersion pattern.
• Additionally, the phaser / lens design removes the inner void formed by the top plate / dustcap assembly, common in all drivers that feature a dustcap archetype cone, thereby reducing a contributor to resonate distortion.
• New cone, still paper (natural wood based cellulose), featuring a natural cellulose / tree-oil based epoxy binder for both secondary and primary cones. This new binder increases
stiff ness fr om voicecoil to whizzer and secondary cone. Naturally derived, this type of lacquer is highly cellulose loving, perfect for tone supporting cellulose paper pulp based cones
as used by Zu. Benefits include rendering the cones impervious to moisture, increased stiff ness without damage to damping, and only increases moving mass slightly, thus keeping the
cone assembly light. Observed benefi ts include consistency of tone and performance, fr om desert to tropic; improved wave propagation velocity within the cone; and improved high
frequency coupling of voicecoil assembly to whizzer cone. The whizzer is now as closely coupled to the voicecoil former as you can get without making the two fr om a single part.
• Whizzer is attached on both the outside and inside of the former, using two types of glues, the inner glue being a poly for damping and the outer our natural epoxy for rigidity and
improved high fr equency support. There has been too much talk about cone breakup modes in hi-fi , and Zu will elaborate on it further in an FAQ on its site, but suffi ce it to say that
the dynamic behavior of paper is radically diff erent than those of metals, plastics, ceramics and composites. Don’t worry about breakup and beaming with Zu’s10” driver, just give it a
listen and see how she sounds. After all, that’s what it’s about isn’t it —the music.
High efficiency is very important to all Zu loudspeakers. Not only does it aff ord the user to explore a whole world of amplification technologies but it is Zu’s opinion that it’s the only way
to realize accurate and convincing dynamic realism. The more a cone moves the more harmonic distortion it generates, if you like it clean, dynamic, real, and compelling, you want high efficiency. Efficiency (not simply voltage sensitivity) can be split in two, the first being acoustic power transfer, generally related to the diaphragm and its supporting elements; and electrical power transfer, the electric and magnetic, i.e. motor, transformer, and so on. Both elements must be balanced with the loudspeaker as a whole and factored with the bandwidth, polar response characteristics, and dynamic range and behavior.
Ribbon tweeter.
Traditionally, ribbon tweeters have lacked some degree of dynamic realism, particularly in the att ack; they have also struggled to get good power transfer fr om amp to ribbon element, a function of a very large magnetic gap and a transformer-requiring conductive metal alloy diaphragm. Ribbons have always made great sound, particularly their ability to
recreate treble ambient bloom and directional cue gradients, stuff that can really pull you into great recordings. And on the recording side of things, stereophonic recordings using ribbon
microphones simply defi ne what is possible with stereo. The selected ribbon is, by ribbon standards, effi cient, particularly were Zu needs it to perform, above 10k. Its transformer and motor are really well engineered and fabricated, and the assembly’s balance between attack, sustain, and decay is as good as it gets. Yes, this ribbon, like nearly all others, uses an aluminum alloy as its diaphragm, but unlike metal dome tweeters, the ribbon’s diaphragm density is nearly perfectly matched to that of air, rending it about as well damped as a transducer can be, and very acoustically effi cient. Sure we prefer the skin and bones approach in material selection, but sometimes, well at least in this case, technology and space-age materials can improve on nature in rendering that whet treble tone.
Essence cabinet is a combination of Baltic birch ply and MDF. The Baltic birch ply is used to strengthen and damp the outer MDF baffle, reducing much of the MDF color and improving it’s
tone. MDF is used for the outer plates ensuring a precise and fl at surface fi nish. Real wood veneers are laminated to the MDF, in the case of wood veneer fi nish, which are in turn sealed and finished in either satin gloss or super high gloss. Zu Cable pure copper internal cabling is used within the Essence, it is cold forged directly to the Cardas copper binding post lugs and runs uninterrupted all the way to the Zu260FRD/G4’s voicecoil leadins. No solder joints, no crossover points, no Y-outs, nothing to get in the way of tone and texture. No other loudspeaker manufacture puts this level of engineering, performance, and cost into internal cable assemblies. Every eff ort is made to eliminate junctions, solder points, impedance irregularities and maximize the positive benefi ts possible with specifi cally engineered and precision cabling. True on the main harness and also true of the high-pass network feeding the ribbon. performance of signal and power.
Cold forged termination.
Solder of all types is less than optimal joining method for wire. It is less conductive than basic bare wire wrap and is at least four times more resistive than a good gold forged connection as applied to moderate loudspeaker level signal. Cold forging connections ensures a lifetime of trouble fr ee, unchanging performance; solder does not.
Cardas copper binding posts.
They are easy to use, support bare wire, pins, standard 1/4” (6.3mm) spades, oversized 5/16” (8mm) spades and in a pinch work with banana plugs. They are simply the best sounding, easiest to operate binding posts on the market. And of course, we use the unplated pure copper lugs and directly cold forge the lugs to the internal cable harness, a feature of all Zu loudspeakers ever produced. Pure copper contacts require just a touch of maintenance but sound bett er than gold, nickle, or any other plating, totally worth the fi ve minutes
you have to spend each year to keep things fresh.
Hand cut super high gloss finish (also available in Zu Smooth Matt e, and other custom finishes).
